History

Riverside Savings Bank, formerly Roanoke Rapids Savings Bank, is a mutual chartered bank. Our strength comes from our ability to focus on the banking needs of our customers, and not those of stockholders.

The Bank was founded in 1914 as Roanoke Rapids Building and Loan with an office in downtown Roanoke Rapids. In 1961, the name was changed to Roanoke Rapids Savings and Loan and a year later, its main office was moved to 265 Roanoke Avenue. Three decades later, as the regulatory environment changed in the North Carolina banking system, it became obvious that it would behoove Roanoke Rapids Savings and Loan to convert its charter to a State Savings Bank (SSB). In July of 1992, the name was changed to Roanoke Rapids Savings Bank, SSB. A few months later, the Bank constructed a new office on Becker Drive that eventually was expanded and became the new headquarters in 1995. The Bank also opened an office on Bolling Road in the year 2000 that served as a full-service branch and then later converted to a mortgage lending facility.

Along with Roanoke Rapids Savings Bank, there was another community bank in the area, Roanoke Valley Savings Bank. In June of 2018, the two institutions announced their intent to merge. The merger was completed later that year, in October. The merged financial institution continued operations under the name Roanoke Rapids Savings Bank. The former headquarters of Roanoke Valley Savings Bank located at 828 Roanoke Avenue was eventually converted to mortgage loan office.  Later, all operations in Roanoke Rapids were consolidated into the Becker Drive headquarters.

In 2022, the Bank’s name was officially changed to Riverside Savings Bank and a new mortgage loan office was established in Clayton, NC in the Clayton Corners Shopping Center.

The original purpose of Riverside Savings Bank was to provide a means to house the community. These means have been met through the years by paying a good return on customer deposits of which loans have been made on residential houses. This type of business is still today the predominant business of the Bank. Over the years, the Bank added additional products and services. Services such as checking accounts, consumer loans, business loans, automated teller machines, and online banking give the Bank’s customers a one stop banking facility for all their personal and business banking needs.
